[Ricky] Hey, shake a leg! ([Hotel Employees] Hey, shake a leg!)
It's Mr. Greg ([Hotel Employees] It's Mr. Greg)
And he's here to spend his dough all over the town.
[Hotel Employees] He's got the bucks.
[Greg] I've got the bucks.
[Hotel Employees] It's all deluxe.
[Greg] It's all deluxe.
When you're dining out with me, it's the finest steak and brie.
And if I break a table
It ain't no-- whoa!
(Just bill it to my bank.)
[Ricky] A hundred bucks? Gee, thanks!
[Pearl] I must admit...
[Steven and Greg] You must admit.
[Pearl] It's a perfect fit!
[Steven and Greg] You look great in it!
[Pearl] And those fountains I found wasteful are actually quite tasteful.
This city's got its charm, unlike that termite ridden barn,
and any time with Steven makes for a delightful evenin'!
[Greg] You're having fun!
[Pearl] More or less...
[Greg] So dance with me! Just say--
A Word From The Composers
"This is the demo for the song “Mr. Greg” from the musical episode of Steven Universe entitled… Mr. Greg !
I love old timey, vaudeville-y schtick. And Greg spending big bucks at a fancy big city hotel had old timey schtick written all over it. While writing the outline for Mr. Greg, I came up with the first half of this tune and pitched it a cappella to the group. It felt very silly, but it must have amused everyone enough to stay in the picture.
We started making a demo. I had the beginnings of a bass line and the percussion, and Jeff came in and made it an actual song with some great jazzy chords and an insane guitar solo, which I'm pretty sure he just improvised.
Like I said before, the song was originally only the first verse and the instrumental. In the outline, Greg, gets so caught up in the spirit of the music that he asks Pearl to dance, and that's when she pulls away - showing that Greg and Pearl have a long way to go.
We showed the demo to Joe, and I believe he was the one who said this needs a second verse. Together we wrote a second verse, with Pearl singing, that incorporated those story beats into the lyrics.
Have a listen!
